Hello, my lovelies! I haven't been around much, because - well, I seem to require payback in the karma department; the universe is pissed off at me and life is a pretty joyless ride these days. But every once in a while, my fannish delight resurfaces. And I'm getting closer to actually finishing a fic! Yeah, will wonders never cease. Restoring my pleasure in the written word would go a long way toward making me happier.

But this post actually exists to share a pair of visual pleasures with you. Both Snape-related, of course, as that particular fire refuses to go out. And as with fic writers, we have some marvelous artists scattering splendor across our paths.

First, please hop over to Daily Deviant and bask in the pervy beauty of [livejournal.com profile] akatnamedeaster's NSFW young Snape doing naughty and rather risky things to his equipment. The requested kink is sounding, which is something most of us will not want to try at home, but Kat has created a rosy, sexually luminous image of a school-aged half-clothed Snape (complete with a grey underpants cameo) having it off with a metal rod up his unmentionables. The coloring is sensual and warm, Snape is blitzed on sensation, and I loved the pic on sight.

Sounding Sev

The other piece is by a Russian artist whose work I like a great deal, but this portrait only turns up in an HP gallery that doesn't allow linking to the individual artworks. Thus I'm going to post the pic here under a cut, something I wouldn't normally do because it circumvents the artist's control. If there were any other means of linking you to it, I'd substitute that in a second.

But this is such a dark, intense, beautiful (that's the theme here) portrait that I want to share. I don't know how many fans have run across it, and it's too wonderful to languish unseen. NSFW due to nudity and a flash of arse crack, although it's entirely non-sexual, a view of naked Snape from the back peering over his shoulder like a suspicious, black-eyed raptor.

I have other art recs, but I'll save them for next month when I take a turn on the [livejournal.com profile] crack_broom.

I had a whole post written up about the death of my uncle the night before last, but I'm trying to make my journal more of a lighthearted place, so I think simply mentioning it is enough. He was the last remaining link to the people who raised me, and now that he's gone, my brother and sister and I occupy the positions of elders in my family. It's unfathomable, and the rest of my life to the visible horizon feels different already.

In other news - well, not news, since my flist is far ahead of me on this front, but [livejournal.com profile] lokifan's Love Meme is busy spreading joy and providing a chance to comment with fondness and admiration to friends and vaguely familiar names you know only from this one memorable fic or that beloved piece of art. I was very touched by the sweet words people left for me, considering I've been an unproductive member of fandom for a couple of years now (something I hope to change with [livejournal.com profile] hoggywartyxmas, because by God, I really like the fic I'm writing, and I want to do it justice for my recipient's sake <3). Go over there and scatter some love if you haven't already, or add your own name. Don't be shy. I'm a little behind on paying compliments, but I'll get there.

Lastly, I'd like to point you to a marvelous short comic on deviantArt, although I suppose I ought to warn the unwary that Snape/Dumbledore is one of my favorite pairings, and you'll get an eyeful by clicking the link. It's beautifully drawn, amusing and poignant by turns, with a sprinkling of winter and a dusting of romance. And I urge you to read the artist's tongue-in-cheek description of what the heck led to this unconsummated kiss.

A cringeworthy event by lifeofapottedplant. (Click on the image to enlarge it.)

*quiet shriek of joy* (Quiet because it's almost 2 a.m. and I'm trying to be considerate here.)

I got a fantastic package in the mail today! Actually the tenant who rents the main house in front of my granny unit got a package - my package - oh so professionally delivered by the postal service to - I bet you thought I was going to say 'a mailbox,' right? Well, how utilitarian of you. I am given to understand that mailboxes are so last century. No, this package full of priceless art was wedged between a grimy, cobwebby exterior drainage pipe and the wall of the house, in full view of anyone passing by on the street. Good thing my neighbor noticed it and made sure it found its way to my door. I suppose I ought to be thankful the mail carrier didn't simply toss it into the middle of the driveway for cars to run over.

>:-(

However, let me speak of what was inside. You would not believe the wonderful artwork revealed once I ripped open gently and carefully removed the tape and undid the sealed flaps of the envelope. I am now the proud and somewhat dazzled owner of a veritable feast of Snape-related and Snacky art (fortunately undamaged, or there would be hell to pay), courtesy the extraordinary generosity of [livejournal.com profile] akatnamedeaster.

Many on my flist will already be familiar with Kat's achievement: complex storylines, naked men, humor, heartbreak, pervy sex, besotted sex, grand adventures, character studies, emotional kink, bottoming from the top, daft twonks, magical brutality, mutual devotion, and everything in between, all rendered in graceful pencil lines, panels full of vivid expressions, palpable emotion, and burning hotness. The amount of work that goes into a full-length comic like Advent, for example, which just concluded earlier this evening, is astonishing. Kat's gift for unfolding a story in visual terms makes me, a word person, inexpressibly envious. And her art is distinctive, her conception of the characters potent and beautiful and convincing. It's hard to describe how subtle and various the expressions are, even after many years and hundreds of drawings, how they continue to surprise and delight and breathe life into Severus and Sirius and their friends, family, and milieu.

But the art on paper - the art I've held in my hands - has an extra dimension. It really is that good. Kat really is that talented. It's brought home even more powerfully by me being able to tilt these pages to the light in order to examine the details, the pencil strokes, the highlighting, the anatomy, the careful structuring of the tale. The marvelous, beloved faces. They have a luminous quality. Just take a look at these:

Deviltry - that tensely erotic Snape/Harry pic Kat drew for [livejournal.com profile] hp_kinkfest in response to my prompt. OMG, Snape's face, so seductive and subtly disturbing.

One of my favorite pages from Advent - Severus and his braces and his dart-throwing pose!

Another favorite page - their expressions and their happiness, Sirius grabbing one of Severus' braces, Severus grabbing Sirius' tie - irresistible.

Welcome Home - rimming! Need I say more?

I also want to link to a drawing I'm in love with that Kat sent me a while ago and I foolishly failed to mention:

Smirky - Snape in his undershirt. Sardonic, intelligent, sexy bastard Snape.

I am blown away. I've been smiling nonstop since I opened the package, and I'll fall asleep thinking about them. Thanks hardly seem adequate, but even so, thank you, Kat. You are an absolute treasure, and I'm so pleased to own originals of the art that has brought me so much joy.

Mine, all mine! Okay, no, not really, it's for all of us to share, but it's a sizzling piece of artwork for a prompt I left, so I'm just going to swing from the chandelier for a bit. It's practically designed to locate my buttons and descend upon them like a heat-seeking missile.

The picture is of Snape and Harry, Harry caught in Snape's sexual field, which has an air of dark magic and carnal arrogance about it. The artist mentions going for the "erotically elegant," which is everything I could want in this scenario. Elegance rises from the page like sweet and possibly drug-infused smoke.

The kink here? Snape is wearing leather gloves. Harry's licking one finger, eyes closed as if dreaming. His tongue and the leather are touching. Excuse me while I palpitate a little.

The drawing is beautiful and slightly creepy and deeply, um, relevant to my interests. Harry is completely in thrall, and I'm completely entranced, and Snape has the anticipatory, slightly brimstone look of a high priest of virgin sacrifice. He's gorgeous.

Go pay them a visit if you'd like to see what I mean.

You know, I've got to be one of the luckiest and most blessed writers in HP. I don't produce much (understatement), and these days I'm doing spectacularly well if I show my face online. I've fallen off the commenting wagon, and every time I make an effort to get back in the feedback swing, RL laughs at me and takes my keyboard away. (In related news, the store is surviving, but my life consists of either working or doing a passable impression of a zombie, the end.) So it's not like I'm giving other people the praise I should be or conveying how much my flist means to me or how central to my imagination all of you and your works are. I'm not doing anything to deserve this.

Yet here's a gift. A beautiful gift. The latest in a line of marvelous works inspired by something I wrote. An expression of remarkable talent, freely offered.

So, last night I made my weekly visit to deviantArt, and I checked the page of one of my favorite artists. They'd posted a new work, a pic of a bedridden Snape with a weary but peaceful and poignant face, Harry seated beside him, face pressed into his pillow. They're holding hands. The colors shimmer quietly. And there's a blaze of light across Snape's bedding that … oh. It's not a blaze, it's an angel. An angel with a sword. Oh, I said again, and scrolled down to read the artist's notes.

It's an interpretation of one of my personal favorite moments from The White Road, the sort of secretly glowing, meaningful touchstone that helped pull me through the writing of that fic.

Field of Sleepwalk by john-n-mary

Go take a look, at this and the rest of the artist's work. You'll see an extraordinary gallery full of marvelous, whimsical, eerie, elegant, intensely beautiful drawings. Leave a word of appreciation, if you like.

So much love, fandom. I'm very lucky to have found you.
So, the day started out well (golden autumn, two whole days off, no family crises) and deteriorated as it went on (no family crises ha ha, said the universe, wrong again!). Now it's late and dark, and I sat me down at my computer to scroll through my flist in a desultory fashion, seeking something to distract me. And whoa!

I got my wish.

[livejournal.com profile] sarkysue, who wrote the lovely four-part Snarry fic Revealed, Gently (links to the ending with the chapter list), is also, as it happens, a talented artist. Earlier today, she posted a double nude portrait of Snape and Harry based on When the Rose and the Fire Are One, a fic I wrote in 2008. There are two versions of the portrait, a pencil drawing and a watercolor, and both are beautiful-ugly, strange and almost confrontational, the painting exquisitely tinted and the drawing flowing with clean lines and sharp bones. Snape is rendered in a style that pays tribute to Egon Schiele, while Harry's body is more classical, with the slight hip-tilt common to ancient Greek statuary. Their faces are amazing. There is nothing romantic about these two except for their clasped hands -- and for this fic, that's perfect.

I'd highly recommend clicking through to [livejournal.com profile] sarkysue's gallery, where you can click again to enlarge the pictures. For some reason posting them to her journal ended up blurring the images, while the Scrapbook versions remain clear and true.

Thank you so, so much for the wonderful surprise, [livejournal.com profile] sarkysue. I know I've said it before, but truly, the talent in this fandom astounds me.

The lower you fall, the higher you'll fly
I'm squeezing in a rec before too much more time passes, because work has me hopping like a flea on a griddle and I've been too tired this week to give all the recent fest fics and art their proper due. Even so, I'm totally squeeful over a piece inspired by one of my own fics, and not one I would ever have expected to appeal in that way. [livejournal.com profile] cabepfir has taken a crucial scene from In Infinite Remorse of Soul and captured one of the showdowns between Snape and Dumbledore, a moment when Snape confronts Dumbledore with the unavoidable erotic tensions and unpleasant truths that lie twisted between them.

[livejournal.com profile] cabepfir has given me exactly what I want, a fierce, betrayed Snape, naked and furious and demanding a response, and a nonplussed, almost prim Dumbledore, gazing upon what he craves but unwilling to concede an emotional inch. It's an astute crystalization of a scene that changes the terms between them and sets Snape upon a different course. It's very true to the way I see these two in this fic, specific to that one irreversible moment.

Go take a look if you're curious. I love Snape's snarl and refusal to be ashamed. And thank you so much, [livejournal.com profile] cabepfir! It made my day. :D

Okay, let me just say this upfront: I have been incredibly blessed by this fandom, and among the extraordinary, unexpected gifts I've received have been the glorious artworks based on my fics. I love with a fierce love everything that's been drawn, painted, or inspired by my own Snarry passion, and I don't care if I'm biased: all these pieces are beautiful. All of them are intense.

Recently [livejournal.com profile] ac1d6urn hung out her commission shingle. I've always adored her work, both fic and art, and I was feeling flush with having just paid off a ten-year-long debt, so I pounced on her post. I had a couple of scenes in mind that I longed to see brought to life, and Acid selected "The White Road" as her source material. She singled out one of the most (for me) emotional moments in the whole fic, the pivot which retroactively justifies everything that came before and everything that will come after. It's a suffocating, painful, heartbroken moment, and it takes place in the Shrieking Shack, a lonely place full of terrible memories.

The result is phenomenal. Look at the wonderment and uncertainty she puts on Harry's face, the stunned tenderness with which he strokes Snape' hair. I wanted this to be the moment a piece falls into place for him, that small shift in understanding that changes things forever. Acid captures that. Harry looks so young here, but he doesn't shrink from the strange burden of having Snape, bloodsoaked and helpless, in his arms. The brilliant, spooky image of Ron and Hermione's disembodied arms casting Lumos is incredibly atmospheric; the way their shadows on the opposite wall point almost accusingly at Snape adds to the tension, the sense that nothing is promised, that Snape is still balanced before the wand of fate.

Speaking of Snape - oh my God, has Acid given me what I want here. She was unbelievably patient and generous with my begging quibbling, and she's created the face I was looking for, the grimace of pain and surrender, the hunched-over vulnerability of a lost soul hardly daring to believe. This is a Snape who has no choice but to let his weakness show, and the way he hides his face and claws at Harry's robes is exactly what I wanted. My heart aches every time I look at it, but I can't stop looking.

So go. Go see for yourself. I'm linking to [livejournal.com profile] ac1d6urn's journal so that you can leave feedback if you'd like, and because there's a marvelous tutorial included in her post, showing the steps she went through to achieve this painful, gorgeous image.

Thank you, my dear. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

No doubt everyone on my flist has already seen this, but for those few who missed it: the awesome [personal profile] glockgal has rediscovered her Beatles love and merged them into Marauders era HP. The result is hilarious and fantastic and utterly charming. And oh, wee Snape's expression! I wouldn't drink any tea handed to me by Ringo during his Magic Christian phase, dearie. Just saying'.

So, in the last-minute scramble to make my bids count during the help_haiti fundraiser, I singled out three possible candidates and threw my financial weight into the bidding. I won two out of three. [personal profile] camillo1978 pledged to draw a Snarry pic of my choice, and within a couple of days she contacted me with previews of an absolutely drool-worthy piece of art. (What? 'Drool-worthy' is a technical term.* Trust me on this.)

This is a pencil drawing, and the care she's taken to create a version of Snape according to my specifications is… well, phenomenal. Fantastic. He's hot, he's ugly, he's lined and tired and worn around the edges, and he's staring at Harry with a gleam of both amusement and erotic anticipation. His hand's beautiful, and he looks relaxed and inviting, somehow without sacrificing his identity as a greasy git.

Harry, standing in his undershirt, with his long, lissome arm, is the perfect foil. Go look. Go envy me. *smirk*

Ordinarily I'd link directly to the drawing, but in this case I'm linking to [personal profile] camillo1978's post so you'll know where to leave comments. Don't forget to click on the pic at the DeviantArt page to see it full-sized.

What Are You Hiding?

Alas, I seem to have hit the brain-dead portion of the evening, where all the words spiral down the drain. So let me flail with excitement and point and make, "Gah!" noises. Because [personal profile] enname, the sneaky devil, has been working on a second illustration to a fic I wrote last year (I've managed to exceed my own lowest expectations by finishing absolutely nothing this year), and she posted it for me earlier this evening. It's Snape and Harry from The White Road, and it catches them in one of the pivotal scenes (for me). There's a a kind of brilliant intensity to it, a clash of wills and a clinging and contorting and balancing, while fate decides which way Snape will fall. I'm staggered and flattered, humbled by her skill and so childishly pleased to see such a sublimely Snarryish moment, that all I want to do is bounce around the room like a great big ball of squee.

There's something undeniably magical about having a moment from one's own fic take shape and rise dark and sharp from the flatness of the page. [personal profile] enname's put immense care into concentrating the emotional quality of the scene, telegraphing the subtle burning and tangled longing and brittle, incipient violence, as well as the sweet gravity that emanates from Harry. There's almost a spiritual echo underneath, due in part to the way they're posed, the way Harry gives himself and the way Snape bends under the burden of being offered what he wants, succumbing to it and fighting it at the same time. It's intensely sexual, but beyond that it hints at communion and possession, which aren't necessarily easy things to experience.

I'll shut up now, because I could stumble onward at great length, throwing words at this wonderful portrait of a serious, beautiful youth and the bowed, ugly, almost nightmarish man he's chosen. Please go look for yourselves. It makes me insanely happy to have this picture of the two of them so vividly at odds and so very entangled.

Not Work Safe.

"Tell you what, then," Harry replies, "we'll kneel together," and when she can bring herself to think about it later, Lily suspects this was the moment, for all he's cold as stone, that catches Snape unprepared; the moment, for all that he's brutally trying to protect himself, when the cliff edge crumbles underfoot and there's nothing he can do to stop himself from falling.
*waves and points excitedly* FLORAHART, LOOK!!!

Okay, I am very, very remiss in getting this posted, because I am an exhausted halfwit most of the time. But never mind that, o flist! Click here and enjoy the wonderful double portrait that [livejournal.com profile] enname drew for me!

I can't really express how much I love this piece. I adore pencil work, and this is just ravishing. [livejournal.com profile] enname traces the emotion between Harry and Snape with such heartbreaking subtlety - their faces, the little wrinkle in Snape's forehead and the way he allows himself to lean slightly against Harry, the way Harry shuts his eyes, tucks his head down, and presses back, holding tight. It's overwhelmingly tender and exactly as I imagined it. I adore the fact that she included Snape's fragile wristbones and that his borrowed pyjamas are slightly too short for his legs. I love the way their hair overlaps and blends together, and something twists inside me at the depth of serious yearning in Harry's face and at the haunting way Snape gazes up, allowing himself one moment's acceptance of what Harry offers. And I can't stop staring at Snape's cheekbone, so gaunt, so burnished with light.

But here, I'll stop wittering so you can see for yourselves (btw, if you like it, please let [livejournal.com profile] enname know):

Keep clicking through if you want to view a close-up of this drawing. It's worth doing because - well, simply because it's beautiful.

Thank you again, [livejournal.com profile] enname. I cherish this pic intensely, just so you know.

For those curious about context but who don't want to read the whole damn fic, this is the scene she's illustrating:
