This is a quick drive-by and finger-point of a rec, because I ought to be working on something else, but I'd like to encourage more people to read this [livejournal.com profile] hp_kinkfest entry because I almost didn't attempt it myself. I'm not usually drawn to the kink or the pairing, but [livejournal.com profile] pauraque wrote it, and I've learned to trust their sensitivity, pinpoint eye for details, attunement to emotional hungers, accretions, confusions, and irrational truths, and their fresh, unflinching approach to characters' deeper experiences.

The kink is lactation, the pairing is Harry/Hermione, and it's a very touching fic. It's not exactly sexual except insofar as breasts and suckling are culturally inflected, and there's a nervous quality to some of their interactions that give a nod to the sense of transgression, but the story isn't really about that. Instead it deals quite honestly with a child's deprivation and with the power of love and the bonds of friendship, of healing and home. It's breathtakingly intimate, to the point that I, as a reader, felt like an intruder upon a supremely private moment.

This is the kind of fic that adds a crucial piece I never knew was missing to my conception of a character. The revelations here will always color how I see Harry now, in a way that deepens my compassion.

It's a short fic (~3600 words) and beautifully handled. Even if you're unsure about the kink, I'd suggest giving it a try.

[livejournal.com profile] iulia_linnea is weighing the possibility of a winter fest, and she's posted a poll to help her decide which defunct community to revive. [livejournal.com profile] snapecase is one of the candidates, and since it's among my top five favorite fests I thought I'd try to stir up some support. Go over to her journal and vote!

Of course, there are other worthy contenders in the running, but I'm hoping my flist will give Snape a leg up.

I still owe responses to my last post, which got knocked out from under me by - well, long story short, I've decided that I'm really quite adept at functioning under stress in everyday life, but my brain saves it up and takes payment in insomnia. I've seen more than my share of 5 a.m.s recently, and not because I'm an early riser.

Anyway, have some rambling tidbits.

--First, have you been over to [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore's HP Character Love Fest?

banner by [personal profile] capitu

Several of us Snape fans have already weighed in, but I notice that wonderful characters like Minerva and Albus aren't getting enough love. Pop over if you have something you'd like to add. The mini-fest runs through Valentine's Day.

--Next, an interesting possibility for some of the podficcers on my flist. Do with it what you will.

ETA for clarity: I have nothing to do with this personally. I'm just passing along a request I noticed in a fannish podfic comm, and I thought it might be relevant to some of the people I know.

"Hello amplificathon community members,

I'm assembling a feature on fan fiction and shipping for my programme, The Blackwood Review, on the Edinburgh student radio station, FreshAir.org.uk. I am hoping to use one or more short excerpts from podfics in order to illustrate the feature.

I am seeking podficcers who would be willing to grant me permission to use their work. I plan to talk about Harry Potter fandom and the Lord of the Rings fandom*, so I am interested in podfic from those fandoms in particular. It should be noted that the show is for a general audience, and thus the excerpt used would need to be PG (but not the entire piece its excerpted from, of course). M/m, f/f, and m/f pairings are all welcome.*

I will treat the topic, your fannish identity, and your work respectfully. If this sounds like something you would be willing to help me with, please contact me by emailing me directly at daniel@favand.net."

*(Emphasis added.)

--Thirdly, in news related to my current non-Potter reading fandom, the TV show Person of Interest:

Holy mother of fine writing! For those familiar with the show, I beg you to go take a look at the amazing WiP Armor by [livejournal.com profile] livenudebigfoot. The prevailing pairing in PoI is Finch/Reese, which if you've seen the series will not surprise you. This is Finch/Fusco, fastidious, physically damaged billionaire computer genius & stocky, bulldog-shaped bad cop on the rocky path to redemption, and it's full of suit porn and painful emotion and splendid writing and perfect voice. For fans of the conventionally unattractive, the sort of pairing that can't be taken on faith and needs a long, luxurious build-up, this is a lavish treat. Chapter 22 of 27 just posted, so I think you can depend upon it being finished.

--Lastly, two non-fannish recs for those interested in folk music. I had never heard of these musicians before, but I'll be waiting impatiently for future releases:

Fire & Fortune by Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker. The singer's voice is gorgeous, like cool, clear water.

Mynd by Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin. Another gorgeous voice, with a bit more dusk in it.

Today is the last day to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] deeply_horrible's Sloppy Seconds fest! It's our small tribute to Snape's terrible track record at relationships, and it takes a leaf (all the leaves, actually) from [livejournal.com profile] dysfuncentine's recently ended run. So many lovely Snape prompts were left languishing in a corner, how could we resist scooping them up? So this is your opportunity to give our favorite loser at love a chance at romantic revenge and to set your inner Snape free!

Sloppy Seconds Fest
[info]
I suspect most of my Snape-inclined flisties have already seen promotions for this fest, but I thought I'd give it one last boost, since prompt-claiming closes tomorrow:

Bring Back the Bastard!
[info]deeply_horrible: Celebrating Severus Snape in all his flawed glory!

I'm a HUGE fan of ambiguous Snape, cold in his hatred, hot in his passions, possessed of a spiteful tongue and drenched in darkness. I like him best when his good and bad qualities are so intertwined it's hard to tell them apart. Yes, he loves deeply, but his love is obsessive and unhealthy. He's brave, but he's also qualified to outface horror because he once swore allegiance to it; once, perhaps, inflicted it. He's brilliant, but his intelligence is demonstrably amoral. He protects what he hates. He kills what he loves. He has what it takes to murder Dumbledore at a moment's notice, for the best of all possible reasons. He's ugly and skinny and self-sacrificing, as unshakable in his quest for atonement as he is in his loathing of -- pretty much everything, including himself.

This fest explores the endless contradictions posed by Snape's actions, background, behavior, and fate. 194 prompts were submitted (some of them mine!) and there's one day left to sign up and make a choice. If this sounds the least bit intriguing, come check it out or join the com to follow along:

Hello, dear flist, it's recs time! Time for me to pop in, as I do now and then, to point you toward what pleases me. I've just finished a month on [livejournal.com profile] crack_broom, where I recced Snarry fics (link goes to the first of eight), and now that it's February I'll be serenading Snape's life over on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van with stories spanning his childhood to the end of his life and beyond. For those who already know my tastes there won't be many surprises, but these fics all deserve to be added to the lists for posterity.

Now, about [livejournal.com profile] snapecase: the final story posted today, and I've been so sluggish and behind on my reading that I've entirely failed to pull my thoughts together. The truth is I *still* haven't caught up (I've been lured away by books: Rebecca West, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Molly Keane, to name a few. Apparently I'm in high Anglophile mode and regressing to the first half of the 20th century). But now the fest is ending (woe!), so it behooves me to stir my uninspired arse and strew a few petals before those who deserve bouquets.

In no particular order )

[livejournal.com profile] snapecase will post its reveals on February 7th, and in the meantime you might want to join in the guess-the-creator game that concludes the fest.
Title: No Room for the Weak
Character(s): Eileen, Harry, Severus
Rating: PG
Word Count: 10,436
A/N: Originally posted here for the severus_shorts 50th birthday celebration. Many thanks to [personal profile] loupgarou for helping me keep this one within bounds, and to [livejournal.com profile] iulia_linnea for a wonderful fest and superlative modliness.

I seem to have convinced myself that Joy Division's 1979 album Unknown Pleasures is the ultimate soundtrack to Snape's life.

Summary: There's a Boy Who Lived and a boy who didn't, and even a mother can't always tell them apart.
